Sauna
About the heater
The sauna is fitted with a Misa Sunny electric heater — a Finnish product from Misa Oy, manufactured for the Scandinavian market. The unit is a floor-standing/wall-mounted heater finished in dark grey-brown hammer-tone enamel, with an open rock basket on top filled with olivine diabase stones. Output is between 6.0 and 8.0 kW, controlled by an integrated analogue panel at the base of the unit.
Control panel
The panel has two rotary dials and one safety mechanism:
Left dial — Thermostat
Rotates from norm. (approx. 70–80 °C, recommended for everyday use) to max. The norm. position is right for most sessions. Use max only if the sauna struggles to reach temperature in unusually cold conditions.
Right dial — Mechanical timer (two zones)
The timer has two independent zones:
| Zone | Range | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate runtime | 0–4 hours | Heater starts instantly and shuts off after the selected time |
| FORHÅNDSVALG (Pre-selection) | 1–8 hours | Delayed start — the heater waits the set number of hours, then warms up automatically |
The pre-selection zone is useful if you want the sauna ready at a specific time. Set your desired delay on the FORHÅNDSVALG zone and the heater will start itself.
Reset button (thermal cut-out)
At the base of the panel, next to the thermostat, is a small pinhole labelled "Reset-knapp". This trips if the heater cuts out due to overheating. If the heater is unresponsive and the timer is correctly set, press the reset button with a straightened paperclip or thin pin. If it trips repeatedly — contact us immediately; do not attempt to bypass the cut-out.
Starting the sauna
- Check the stones — the basket should be full and the stones evenly distributed. Never remove stones during operation.
- Set the thermostat to your desired position (norm. is recommended).
- Set the timer to your intended session length (e.g. 2 hours for a standard session). Turn the immediate runtime zone clockwise.
- Heat-up time from cold to approx. 80 °C is typically 30–45 minutes depending on ambient temperature.
- The heater shuts off automatically when the timer expires.
Always turn off manually after your session if you finish before the timer — rotate the timer dial back to 0.
Löyly and the aroma cup
Löyly (steam burst)
Use the traditional wooden bucket and ladle to pour a small amount of water over the stones. The key word is small: 1–2 ladle-loads at a time is plenty. Too much water at once chills the stones sharply and produces an uncomfortable, heavy steam rather than dry, soft heat.
- Pour slowly and evenly across the stones.
- Wait for the temperature to recover (1–3 minutes) between each löyly.
- Use clean, cold water; avoid prolonged use of hard, heavily mineralised tap water.
The aroma cup
Nestled in the centre of the stones is a round soapstone aroma cup (sauna fountain). It is designed for:
- Gentle steam diffusion: Fill the cup with a small amount of water for a steady, mild humidity release.
- Essential oils: A few drops of eucalyptus, pine, or other sauna-appropriate oils in the cup give a subtle aromatherapy effect. Use only oils intended for sauna use — concentrated oils can irritate the eyes.
Clean the aroma cup after each session: pour out remaining water and wipe with a damp cloth. Oil residue can go rancid and bond to the stone if left.
Safety
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Heater cuts out unexpectedly | Press reset button with a paperclip; wait 10 min before restarting |
| Fire or burning smell | Leave the room, cut power at the fuse box, call emergency services |
| Water on heating elements | Do not pour water directly on the elements — stones only |
| Hot metal surfaces | Avoid touching the sides and base of the heater during operation |
| Door stuck | The sauna door must always open from inside without force |
Children must not use the sauna unsupervised.
Electric heaters are not designed for high-volume water exposure. Do not rinse the sauna room with large amounts of water. Normal steam from löyly is perfectly safe.
Maintenance
We clean the sauna between stays. If you notice any of the following, please let us know:
- Stones that are cracked, discoloured, or emit an unusual smell
- The aroma cup has cracks or flaking residue
- The heater makes unusual sounds during operation
- The reset button trips more than once in a session
Stones should be replaced every 3–5 years with regular use — we keep track of this.
